A Day Full of Detail

Today we went to the narrows to go hiking. Our tasks for today were to journal about an animal and an object and then we needed to test the water in the river. It was a very nice and calming day filled with a lot of hiking. I was excited to get to go hiking so that I could look at all the nature and the different types of plants and objects. I had a lot of fun testing the water because we got to get into the river and we got to use our prior knowledge about the water quality to tell if the water was healthy.

When I sat down in my hammock to choose what I wanted to write about I saw a really pretty log/branch and I knew I had to write about it. The reason I thought it looked so cool was that it was very empowering when I stood next to it because it was so tall and big but it also seemed calming because of the green that was growing around it. While I was it closely I realized how detailed it was. Up close I saw the different “wrinkles” in the bark and how the green grass like stuff on it felt like a dog’s fur coat.

The whole day was very fun because I got to goof off with my friends but I also learned a lot in a personal way. I learned that it’s okay to hike by yourself and to be alone with my thoughts. Another thing I realized was that it’s okay just to sit on the sidelines and watch. Today after we got done eating lunch we headed down to the swing to go swimming but I choose to sit in my hammock and watch instead. Even though I didn’t go swimming I had a ton of fun watching everyone and learning about how my senses don’t just work when I am focusing on one object. The whole time I was taking in the moment and trying to remember all of the details. For example, what did the laughs sound like? If someone asked me right now to describe that moment I could give you every detail.

Overall, today I learned a lot about detail. As we were writing I realize how different everything is up close and how we have to take time to appreciate the little details. I noticed so many different things today and I’m very grateful for the experience because it wasn’t just a hike it was also a learning opportunity for the soul.

An image of the tree I study and wrote about.

Smell: The tree smelled like fresh cut grass and wet wood.

Touch: It felt like dried mud with wrinkles and also because of the stuff growing on it the tree felt like a dog's fur.

Sound: It sounded like fur moving on a dog and also like a finger nail file.

Sight: The tree was very big and made me feel small but because of the bend in the branch it somewhat looked like another human bending in the woods. The tree had what looked like green fur growing on it.
